If the antivirus program isn't Outlook friendly, you may experience certain issues while using Outlook. For example, you may see the following text in the status bar when your Inbox folder is being synchronized with Exchange. This particular user has her own mailbox and then access to another shared mailbox. As of yesterday, the shared mailbox (for her only) is hung up on "Updating this folder" and will never update or receive new mail. Make sure the system has enough storage, especially the volume where the Outlook data file (OST) is stored.
